EasyJet's Summer Shockwave: 1,700 Flights Cancelled Amid Air Traffic Control Strikes and Soaring Demand

Aug 8, 2023-  Brace yourselves for a vacation shakeup! EasyJet is cutting 1,700 summer flights, primarily at London Gatwick, causing uncertainty for thousands of travelers. This move comes amid concerns over air traffic control strikes and increasing demand for European airspace.

EasyJet has contacted around 95% of the affected passengers, offering alternative flights or refunds. The remaining 9,000 travelers await rerouting options. Despite being a preventive measure against air traffic control delays, these cancellations account for less than 2% of EasyJet's July-August schedule.

Summer fares could soar as the sector's capacity remains 10% below 2019. However, the UK is expected to witness more flights this month than ever since October 2019. Persisting French air traffic control strikes and the Ukraine conflict pose challenges for UK airlines.

EasyJet's spokesman assures that the airline operates around 1,800 flights and carries approximately 250,000 customers daily. They maintain their commitment to mitigating external challenges for customers. Gatwick, the airline's most extensive base, is approaching total capacity, emphasizing air traffic control issues as it seeks approval for a second runway.

Rocio Concha from the consumer group "Which", highlights the travelers' disappointment and urges EasyJet to provide swift rerouting or refunds to affected passengers.
